- Anthony Rother, Richie Hawtin, Material Object and dozens of other Fax affiliates and fans of the late German producer's label are contributing to the eight-disc package.
EAR/Rational Music label offshoot Carpe Sonum is preparing for release a sprawling compilation in tribute to Peter Kuhlmann, the legendary German composer best known as Pete Namlook, called Die Welt ist Klang.
Kuhlmann, who ran the acclaimed imprint FAX +49-69/450464 (also known simply as Fax) and whose many production credits included collaborations with some of electronic music's biggest names, passed away last November aged 51. In a reflection of Kuhlmann's sizable legacy, Die Welt ist Klang, which was originally conceived as a 3xCD pack, expanded as more and more Fax alumni signed on. In its final form, it'll cover eight total discs: four made up of tracks contributed by alumni, and four more with tracks from fans of the late artist and his label.
Of particular note, of course, are the four discs featuring Fax artists, with nine tracks commissioned specifically for this release and scattered throughout. That includes first track "By A River (For Peter)" from Bill Laswell and Bernie Worrell, as well as efforts from Higher Intelligence Agency, Mick Chillage and Material Object, among others.
The rest of those alumni discs feature a range of older material and until-now unreleased music. Richie Hawtin has contributed "Carocell" from his F.U.S.E. alias, a previously issued cut produced around the time he and Kuhlmann were collaborating as From Within. Anthony Rother's "See Beyond," a Kuhlmann favorite which was to be released on Fax, shows up here as well. Thomas P. Heckmann, Biosphere, Gaudi, Spyra, Dandy Jack—there's simply too many scene figureheads and veteran producers to single out here.
More than 80 total tracks are confirmed to appear on Die Welt ist Klang, and a few more might be added before it's released in November. Aside from the 8xCD box set (that's an artist's rendering of the potential final product at right), a digital version will be available, and for now you can try out many of the tracks at this BandCamp page. Speaking with RA, Dave Wade-Stein, from EAR/Rational Music (which for years managed Fax's US distribution), says the compilation has been mostly funded via pre-orders, and adds, "If there is sufficient interest in a vinyl release to the point where we could crowd-fund it, I will definitely move forward with it."
All proceeds from Die Welt ist Klang will go to Kuhlmann's family. Wade-Stein had this to say about the origins of the project: "Peter Kuhlmann's passing leaves a huge void in the electronic music scene, and once the shock and disbelief wore off, I felt it important to honor him with a tribute release, consisting of tracks from Fax artists as well as fans. The goals are to produce a release which pays tribute to his enormous influence, and will also be a lasting artifact for his family and fans, and to raise money for his family."
