- The Kuwait-born artist's debut LP soundtracks 'a simulated road trip through an imagined China.'
Hyperdub have revealed full details of Fatima Al Qadiri's debut album.
As previously reported, Asiatisch is set to land on May 5th. According to a Hyperdub mailout, the album "provides a simulated road trip through an imagined China," with track titles like "Loading Bejing," "Forbidden City" and "Shanghai Freeway." The label says the record's sound homes in on a sub-strain of grime called sinogrime, which has "a preoccupation with Asian motifs and melodies." It goes onto explore "sonic interchanges between the West and China," blending "mallets, bells, gongs, flutes, steel drums and choral atmospherics with the searing synth-brass and the skittering drums of grime." There's also a "nonsensical Mandarin" cover of "Nothing Compares 2 U," the Prince song that was famously performed by Sinead O'Connor.
