With Sven Väth, Apollonia and Dixon among the highlights, we speak to Richie Hawtin about his plans for 2014.
With 14 shows planned, 2014 will mark the Minus chief's longest stint at the superclub. Operating under the motto Explore.Discover, the Japanese-themed event will run much like last year, with both heavyweight and lesser-known names spread across all five rooms. New additions include ENTER.CNTRL, "an interactive music installation which places the music directly in the hands of partygoers", while ENTER.Sake and the experimental ENTER.Mind both return. The latter will play host to the likes of TM404 (July 31st), Voices from the Lake (August 14th) and Petar Dundov (July 3rd.)
DJ-wise, Jackmaster, Adam Beyer, Chris Liebing and DeepChord will all make their debuts, as will Dixon and Apollonia, who have been confirmed for all-night sets on August 28th and September 18th respectively. As previously, the majority of the action will be split between the larger Discoteca (techno) and the Terraza (house). On August 21st, the former will host Sven Väth's only show away from Amnesia in 2014, with Marcel Dettmann, Luciano and Dubfire also returning. Following his ENTER.Mind appearance last year, Recondite has been booked for the main room on two occasions, playing warm-up on July 3rd and September 11th.
Maceo Plex, Maya Jane Coles, Nina Kraviz and Tale Of Us have all been rebranded ENTER. residents for 2014, each playing multiple shows on the Terraza across the season. tINI (July 24th), Mano Le Tough (September 4th) and Guy Gerber (September 11th) will also feature. The action kicks off weekly at 9 PM in ENTER.Sake, AKA the Sunset Terrace, where resident DJ Hito will be joined by regular headline acts. Highlights include Gaiser VS. Matador on September 11th and Hawtin himself on July 3rd and August 14th.
We spoke to Hawtin this week about his plans for ENTER. in 2014.
What changes have you made to ENTER.Ibiza in 2014?
For us the ENTER.Experience is something that needs to be enjoyed from beginning to end, that’s why we pushed so hard last year with our early opening of the ENTER.Sake bar. Starting at 9 PM is not typical for most of the night-time events on Ibiza, but by the end of 2013 ENTER.Sake had become an early evening gathering spot for our friends and family on the island.
Last year's sake bar lineup was top notch, but I think this year's is even better. Guy Gerber, Dixon, tINI and Claude VonStroke will all play, with special post-midnight sets from island favourite Hito and our residents Bella Sarris and Fabio Florido. And if you can’t wait until 9 PM for the doors to open, then remember that we actually start even earlier each week (7 PM – 9 PM), just down the beach from Space at our ENTER.Beach pre-party, this year at the newly renovated LIPS Beach club.
Last year’s ENTER.Air terrace has now become our ENTER.CNTRL area, where you’ll find hands on interactive technologies that allow everyone to take part in the music making process. The ENTER.CNTRL area is a collaboration with friend Ean Golden from DJTechTools and continues our combined “CNTRL” mission of bridging the gap between fan and performer, inviting everyone closer into the creative process.
Our ENTER.Terrace gets a lighting and sound upgrade in order to give more power and punch to the sets of our diverse lineup. ENTER.Mind returns with a dark and more mysterious cave structure, soundtrack by the likes of Deepbass, Matthew Hawtin, Vince Watson and others who specialise in experimental electronica. Finally, the ENTER.Main room has been completely redesigned to become the "Eye Of The Storm" of the ENTER.Experience.
What's the overarching theme or idea behind the residency this summer?
ENTER.2014 explores the ever-widening scope, diversity and depth of modern electronic music, challenging everyone to take the next step and discover something new. ENTER.2014's design focuses on the incredible diversity found within our scene, using one of our most unique human attributes as our central theme, the human eye.
From afar we find similarities in our looks and within the music we share, by zooming in and looking closer, we explore the more minute details and discover the subtleties and complexities that form individuality and creativity, thereby celebrating the human spirit.
Can we expect anything special from your own headline performances?
Well as most people know, I plan my sets as little as possible, allowing my stream of consciousness to take me and the audience on a trip that’s as much of a mystery to me as it is to them. Being in The ENTER.Main room, a room that I've spent the last six months helping to design, will allow me to embark on weekly five hour-plus rollercoaster rides deep into the darker shades of electronic music. There’s also two sets that I will indeed prepare for: the third exciting rendition of our Luciano vs Hawtin back-to-back set in July and the first ENTER.Click2Click Dubfire VS. Hawtin experience, both of which put myself in collaboration with two incredibly imaginative artists.
What role will ENTER.Mind play this season?
Our ENTER.Mind room was one of the highlights for me last year. Watching many people’s first time experience hearing some of the deeper frequencies of Recondite and TM404, for example, was incredibly inspiring.
This year ENTER.Mind continues to play an important role in helping to broaden the musical scope of the ENTER.Experience. The lineup explores the hypnotic ambience of electronic music, discovering the space in-between tones and beats. Recondite, TM404 and Matthew Hawtin all return to offer their own take on sonic hypnosis, joined by a cast of other like-minded artists such as Artefakt and Ateq. Close your eyes and listen.
Any more personal highlights from the lineup?
I've been working with my team on every aspect of this year’s season for months now and I'll be very happy once we are all sitting down to our pre-opening dinner in a month or so. But before we get there we still have some test setups, rehearsals and a lot more testing to prepare everything in order for things to be perfect when the doors open. Speaking of the opening, I’m really honoured to have Recondite playing the first track in our ENTER.Main room. Lorenz has been a break-out star in the world of electronic music over the past two years, and his sets in our ENTER.Mind room last year were absolutely breathtaking.
Claude VonStroke joins us on the lineup this year. It brings things full circle, reuniting us with many warm memories of late night parties in the Motor City during our formative years. In addition, my friends over at Detroit’s Movement Festival come on board to present a special night in September where we welcome Chris Liebing to ENTER. for the first time. I'm also very excited about the development of some of our younger artists. Bella Sarris has gone from strength to strength, while Hito has developed her own strong following of Ibiza fans.
And this year we welcome new resident Fabio Florido, who's actually been part of the ENTER. promo team for the past two years. The strength of ENTER. continues to build as our team develops and grows, just as you would hope a family to do. Anyway, what am I looking forward to? Waking up early on a Thursday morning, listening to promos, going down to the beach to meet with the PR team and watch our ENTER.Beach parades, dropping by our weekly artist dinner to catch up with new and old friends, the first few drinks on the beach at LIPS and then being one of the first at (or behind) the bar at ENTER.Sake.
