- The collaboration with author John Twelve Hawks, set for release in October, is a kind of sonic adaptation of his trilogy of novels.
John Digweed and his regular collaborator Nick Muir have collaborated with bestselling author John Twelve Hawks on a new album called The Traveler.
The album is named after Hawks' trilogy of science fiction novels, which were apparently written in large part while the author listened to Digweed's mix CDs and radio shows. According to Digweed, Hawks' publisher sent him a copy of the book on behalf of the author as a thank-you for the role Digweed's music played in the writing process. Digweed liked the book and wrote the author a note saying so through his website. While clearing out his junkmail sometime later, Digweed found a reply from the author, where he mentioned that he'd long wondered if the two could collaborate. They settled on creating a piece of music inspired by the author's work that he would narrate.
Actually pulling this off, however, posed some logistical issues. John Twelve Hawks (the name is a pseudonym) lives off the grid and is extremely private. They weren't able to record Hawks' voice properly over the phone, so Digweed says they met him "in the middle of nowhere," recorded his narration and haven't communicated since (save for a few emails via a protected account). The album—"a listening experience far beyond the dance floor," as the press release puts it—presents his narration manipulated by software so that no traces of his voice are present. Bedrock Records will release it with ample liner notes, and a picture-disk single for the cut "3B3" is also in the works.
