  • LA-4A, AKA US producer Kevin McHugh, has shared details for his upcoming debut album Phonautograph. McHugh, who's currently based in Berlin, began working as LA-4A in 2013. (You'll probably also know him as Ambivalent.) That year he set up Delft, a label focused on hardware-only, acid and electro-leaning techno—or as McHugh calls it, "roots techno." Delft has featured his own EPs along with those from the likes of Alden Tyrell, Matrixxman and JPLS, and next it'll be the outlet for an LA-4A LP. According to a press release, Phonautograph is the result of two decades spent within the worlds of music and art, dating back to when McHugh saw Fugazi, the influential post-hardcore group from Washington, DC, for the first time as a teenager. The album sees him drawing inspiration from now-obsolete "communication technologies"—the phonautograph, for example, is the earliest known sound-recording device. Artwork comes courtesy of DL Alvarez, who contributed a "hand-drawn reproduction" of a still image from Stanley Kubrick's sci-fi epic 2001: A Space Odyssey. The album will arrive in May on double-vinyl and digital formats. McHugh will also release his first LA-4A record outside of Delft later this year, by way of London's Unknown to the Unknown. Details regarding that one are still TBA. For now, check out Phonautograph's first track, "Frequenzvariabler," below.
