  • The 1979 collection BBC Radiophonic Workshop: 21 will get a reissue via Light In The Attic records on June 24th. The set originally celebrated the 21st birthday of the famed studios. Founded in 1958, a small group of experimentalists started started out providing sound effects and eventually became the in-house music composers for the entire network. The 45 tracks trace this development from the musique concrète techniques of the early days to ornate synthesizer compositions. Featured on the compilation are pieces by Workshop founder Desmond Briscoe and Dick Mills, his original technical assistant. The most famous tune to come from the studio, Delia Derbyshire’s queasy treatment of Ron Grainer’s theme for Doctor Who, also appears. The label speaks on the importance of the music created in the Radiophonic Workshop, saying its "groundbreaking compositions have provided a major influence on music from The Beatles and Pink Floyd and onwards into the contemporary world of Aphex Twin, Orbital and The Chemical Brothers." The new version comes on lilac vinyl and is limited to 1000 copies. Watch a short documentary on the BBC Radiophonic Workshop below.
