  • The electronic music world is paying its dues to Prince, who died today at the age of 57. Tributes began immediately after the news broke that the iconic musician had been found dead at his Paisley Park Estate in Minnesota. Prince's early adoption of synthesizers and drum machines (particularly the Linn drum) in the late '70s and early '80s, as well as his habit of making one-man-band records like Dirty Mind, had an enormous influence on electronic music in the decades to come. His material spanned funk, hip-hop, R&B and rock with a sound palette that still resonates in contemporary music. He was also a prolific and independently-minded artist, often fighting record labels for the right to release his albums and to have control over his own work. In a Facebook post, Jimmy Edgar said Prince was "one of the most passionate, prolific, musical, stylistic icons of our time. He embodied innovation, but most of all he was one of the most courageous artists to live." Detroit crew Underground Resistance simply posted photos of the Purple One with the caption "respect." Other artists posted their thoughts, memories and tributes on Twitter, which you can read below.
