New York City downtown nightclub Santos Party House has closed its doors.
The 800-capacity venue opened in 2008 at 96 Lafayette Street between Chinatown and Tribeca. Its owners include musicians Andrew WK and Despot. Over the years the two-floor space hosted acts like Jessy Lanza, Novelist and DJ Rashad, as well as Danny Krivit's much-loved Sunday night residency, 718 Sessions.
Santos closed amid controversy over Oi Fest on Sunday night, a punk festival that had been condemned for its neo-nazi ties. It had already been moved from the Brooklyn venue Black Bear Bar, whose management apologized for their "negligence" in a Facebook post. That was its last show.
The club hasn't confirmed if the controversy brought the closure forward. The club's manager, Sean Kane, told DNAInfo that their 10-year lease expires this year and that they've chosen not to renew it. Their site has events listed through the month of June, though an email from the club's event coordinator says otherwise: "Our last day open will be Sunday, May 29th… Anyone looking to book something, please look elsewhere but thank you for having considered us and if we were open, would have loved to have you."
