  • Honest Jon's Records has announced its release schedule for the rest of 2016. Last year the West London outlet was voted by RA as the top label of 2015. (We also published an article in May of 2015 that detailed the 40-year history of Honest Jon's.) Its next batch of releases begins with Mass Migration, an 10-inch EP from Wareika Hill Sounds, led by trombonist Calvin Cameron from Count Ossie's Mystic Revelation Of Rastafari. It came out today, June 9th, and you can listen to clips over at the Honest Jon's website. Next up, in early July, is a 12-inch from Kassem Mosse titled Chilazon. It'll be the Leipzig artist's second appearance on the label after last year's Simone White remix package, and it'll be followed by a full album on Honest Jon's at the end of July. Out in mid-July is a double 12-inch from Shackleton called Devotional Songs, and it's a collaboration with vocalist Ernesto Tomasini. Looking further ahead, the label is promising records from Mark Ernestus and Theo Parrish towards the end of summer. There will also be two albums from brass bands: Chicago's Hypnotic Brass Ensemble, an outfit made up of eight sons of Sun Ra Arkestra's Philip Cohran, and Obadikah from Lagos. There's a retrospective of South African double-bassist Johnny Dyani in the works too, as well as a collaboration with Workshop. Finally, the label says, there will be a second volume of US gospel, following 2015's first edition, "just in time for Christmas." Tracklist Wareika Hill Sounds - Mass Migration 01.
