Detroit club Populux has closed its doors for a week after a social media controversy this weekend.
The trouble started after Thursday's shooting of police offers in Dallas during a protest against police brutality. As FACT reports, the venue's Twitter page first tweeted "#blameobama all you libtards caused these deaths. #dallasshooting," followed by another one that said "#fuckblacklivesmatter," before retweeting conservative pundit Joe Walsh. Populux's Twitter and Facebook pages were taken down shortly after, and the club later claimed it was hacked. Bixel Boys and rapper Vic Mensa have cancelled shows in the wake of the tweets, while Populux has filed a complaint with the FBI about the supposed hacking.
Populux, which opened as an electronic music-oriented venue in the former location of the Magic Stick, is part of the Majestic Theatre complex alongside other venues like the Majestic Cafe and the Garden Bowl, which remain open.
Before they pulled their Facebook page down, the club posted "We stand in solidarity with the Black Lives Matter movement. Those people that know us understand who we are, our belief in equality of all people, and our love for all people."
