  • Forma will release their third album, Physicalist, via Kranky in September. The experimental synth group has a new lineup for this record, having replaced founding member Sophie Lam with multi-instrumentalist John Also Bennett. Physicalist is due out on prominent ambient label Kranky, and it's a departure from their more techno-leaning 2014 EP Cool Haptics. "The double LP contains two distinct halves," Kranky say, "the first consisting of rhythmic compositions derived from the trio’s formidable array of modular and vintage synthesizers, and the second breaking from the grid with ambient, free-flowing experiments on piano, flute and acoustic percussion." It's the first Forma record to incorporate any kind of acoustic instrumentation. The title is a reference to a philosophical school called "physicalism," which posits that the universe is created from physical interactions—a notion that is embodied by algorithmic and loop-based music. Check out "Improvisation For Flute And Piano."
