- Expert Knob Twiddlers, originally released in 1996, has been cleaned up, remastered and supplemented with bonus tracks and alternate versions.
Planet Mu has announced full details for an expansive reissue of Expert Knob Twiddlers, the 1996 album credited to IDM figureheads Aphex Twin and µ-Ziq as Mike & Rich.
Richard D. James and Mike Paradinas crafted Expert Knob Twiddlers in 1994, in the former's shared flat in London during that year's World Cup, and James would go on to edit the ten-track LP together for a release on Rephlex two years later. (It's been referred to as both a self-titled record, and as Expert Knob Twiddlers, a name coming from the sleeve art.) This reissue—first revealed last week—will land on Planet Mu, which Paradinas operates, in September.
According to a press release, the album was "carefully cleaned up, re-edited and remastered from the original DAT tape [and] put into a more fitting order." On top of that, seven more productions—five bonus tracks and two alternate versions—have been added, warranting a release on triple-vinyl and double-CD packs. It's set to come on limited-edition cassette and digital formats, as well, and Planet Mu is also making an official Mike & Rich T-shirt.
This reissue project comes amid a surge in recent activity for both producers. James has put out a handful of Aphex Twin releases over the past two years, including the Cheetah EP from earlier this month, and seen one of his AFX cuts released on Nina Kraviz's ????. Paradinas, meanwhile, has unearthed two archival full-lengths in 2016.
