- Smalltown Supersound will release Geir Jenssen's next LP in September.
A new album from Norwegian ambient artist Biosphere is on the way, titled Departed Glories.
It'll be the first new solo LP for Biosphere, AKA Geir Jenssen, in nearly five years (and his 12th overall). The 17-track album, set for a September release via Oslo's Smalltown Supersound, makes use of hundreds of samples taken from Eastern European and Russian folk music recordings, according to the label, which says Jenssen aimed to create "something reflecting psychological trauma."
While living in Krakow, Jenssen drew inspiration from the Wolski Forest—and in particular, the story of Bronislawa, a 13th-century Polish nun, now beatified, who with others hid in the forest to escape Tartar invaders. We're told he tried to imagine "what kind of music someone like Bronislawa might have heard while trembling among the trees. Not real music, surely, but something the fears in the mind might conjure up." Jenssen was also inspired by images from pioneering Russian photographer Sergei Prokudin-Gorsky. A more than century-old Prokudin-Gorsky color photo serves as cover art for the album.
Aside from this upcoming LP, 2016 has also seen Jenssen put out a new EP and reissue his second album, Patashnik, via his own label Biophon. Meanwhile, Smalltown Supersound's releases this year include a Prins Thomas album and a Mungolian Jetset EP.
