The new event series combines performances and workshops with Lee Gamble, Amnesia Scanner and Beatrice Dillon.
Masãfãt started out last year as a series of small concerts and discussions in London, Cairo and Beirut. This year will be its second season of events, culminating in two weeks of shows and workshops with key Arabic and British artists in London and Cairo.
The London half of the series will go down at the ICA from September 1st through 4th. The lineup includes performances by Mark Fell, Logos, Karen Gwyer, Deena Abdelwahed, Gaika and Mumdance, who travelled to Cairo in 2014 and put together a mix for Dummy blending Egyptian electro chaabi and grime. The Cairo events take place a couple of weeks later, from September 20th through 24th. There Lee Gamble, Rezzett, Amnesia Scanner and Beatrice Dillon top the bill, alongside local talent Abysuif and Dawsha.
The programme also includes a series of film screenings and panel discussions on topics such as Arabic film, hip-hop in Palestine and the problems facing alternative artists across the Middle East. Masãfãt is organised by the ICA and Vent, the Cairo collective who we profiled last year. It's being supported by the Arts Council and British Council.
