  • Katie Gately has signed to Tri Angle for her first album. Color follows the LA-based artist's previous releases for labels like Public Information, Fat Cat and Blue Tapes. (Pipes, released on the latter, comprised recordings made entirely of her own voice.) This is her first release for Tri Angle, which has also signed serpentwithfeet, Brood Ma and Roly Porter this year. Gately, who discovered her passion for electronic music while editing sound for films and studying at USC, takes a "maximalist" approach on Color, which is "meticulously composed from layers of found sounds and manipulations of her own voice," according to the label. "It's always about how much can I add before it just sounds too crazy," says Gately. "What's the most obnoxious thing I can make the song do? How can I have it be just 49% obnoxious and 51% fun? I think there is a pretty consistent thread of wanting to honor both things—wanting to honor the aggressive, not pretty sounds, but then also singing and always including a melody to balance that." Take a listen to first single "Tuck."
