  • Deadbeat is releasing a new album under his given name, Scott Monteith. Qawwali Quatsch is Monteith's first full-length using his given name, which signals a move away from the dub-influenced techno he usually makes. Taking sounds and influences from traditional Qawwali (Sufi devotional music), Dutch label Field Records says the record "features lots of transcendental sounds and hypnotic violins and voices." Monteith was inspired to make it after attending the Wasser Musik festival in Berlin last year, where he saw Asif Ali Kahn's Qawwali band perform. Monteith researched the history of the music and tried to incorporate sounds into his own music, studying scales and rhythms along the way. "Try as I might, the results always came off as some kind of trite, pan-globalist, cultural touristing, world beat garbage and I ultimately gave up in frustration," he says. But a "drunken late night trawl through the hard drive" later that year led him to rediscover the files and feed the sounds through his new studio's equipment. He then sent the music to Godspeed You! Black Emperor's Sophie Trudeau to add violin and vocal work. Check out clips.
