  • Melbourne club The Mercat Basement is set to close in February 2017. According to a press release from the Mercat, the venue will be shutting down after its eight years of operation due to major re-development of the surrounding Queen Victoria Market Precinct in central Melbourne. Information on the QVM Precinct Renewal Master Plan can be viewed on the City of Melbourne website. Since assuming the Mercat name back in 2008, the downstairs club has been home to some of the city's best underground dance parties. Among them were prominent nights like C Grade and Bamboo Musik, while the list of international guests includes names like Jeff Mills, Darkside, Four Tet and Moritz von Oswald. Long-term fixture Animals Dancing has also gone on to become one of Melbourne's most celebrated and enduring house and disco brands. Mercat owner Daragh Kan remarks "over the past 8 years, we've been proud to be a part of Melbourne's world-class clubbing scene. While it's a sad time for all of us, we're thankful that we've got a few months under our belt to give it a proper send off." He indicates that the club will operate as normal until February, with "many of its regular parties hosting their last hurrah" and "a number of special guests and one-off events" on the way. The next month's worth of shows at the Basement includes Animals Dancing with Jan Schulte on September 29th, Untitled with Patricia and Jahiliyya Fields on October 7th and Bunker with Sleeparchive and Claudio PRC on October 28th. The final dance will be on February 11th, 2017.
