  • Spotify's global head of creator services Troy Carter says that streaming services are not properly paying artists. Billboard reports that Carter made the concession during a keynote presentation at the Music Biz Convention in Nashville, Tennessee. However, he went on to attribute the problem to the greater structure of the music industry and emphasised Spotify's pivot from addressing customer needs to addressing the needs of artists, claiming "we are investing in artist careers." Part of this shift lies in sharing Spotify's listener data with artists, Carter said, claiming access to demographic information like age, location and gender can lead to artists better targeting their audience. The news comes in the wake of Spotify's acquisition of a blockchain technology firm in an effort to create greater transparency in how it pays artists.
