  • A new bill from New York City councilman Rafael L Espinal Jr. to be introduced on Wednesday, June 21st, seeks to do away with the city's 91-year-old cabaret law and appoint a night mayor. The news comes after Monday's three-hour public hearing on the status of the 'no dancing' law. Local figures like Discwoman cofounder Frankie Decaiza Hutchinson came out in support of reform, speaking out after rallying outside city hall. Hutchinson addressed council and the packed house saying, "Laws historically used to oppress people should have no place in this city or society in general." Social media reports from the hearing revealed that Espinal, who represents the Bushwick, Cypress Hills, Brownsville and East New York neighborhoods of Brooklyn, announced he would introduce a bill to repeal the cabaret law and appoint a night mayor, a position that already exists in cities like Amsterdam, London, Zurich and Paris.
