Madrid venue Sala Arena has shut its doors after 19 years and 1,655 concerts.
News of the closure was confirmed by the venue's director, Pepo Perandones, on July 24th via Facebook. "This morning I closed Sala Arena once and for all," he wrote. "The same hotel they've been building on top of the venue for three years (much to the disruption of the concerts, by the way) has won the battle. Thanks to everyone for everything."
Sala Arena, which has also been called Sala Heineken and Sala Marco Aldany, was located on Calle Princesa, right by Madrid's main square, Plaza España. Over the years it's hosted a wide range of acts, from electronic stars like Jeff Mills, Soulwax and Richie Hawtin to pop and rock giants such as Shakira and The Flaming Lips. On July 25th, Perandones posted a list of all the artists to have played the venue.
All the shows that were scheduled to take place at Sala Arena in the coming months will be relocated to different venues in the capital.
