  • A new learning center for electronic music will open in Chicago in December. Chicago Phonic, located at 1722 North Western Avenue in West Town, was founded by Daryl Cura, who runs the Eargasmic Recordings label. He's one of the school's mentors alongside Jamal Moss, the prolific artist best known as Hieroglyphic Being, and Tim Nickless, AKA Tim Nice, a DJ, producer and engineer who hosts a show on WNUR radio. Chicago Phonic is set to host two four-week classes that begin next month: one offering instruction on DJing with Technics 1200 turntables, the other teaching entry-level production skills on Ableton Live software and Push 2 MIDI controllers. (The space is fully equipped with turntables, computers and controllers.) There will also be one-off workshops and private lectures, and open studio hours for enrolled students and those who purchase a pass. Moss tells RA that the center "is about legacy, and forging a path for the next generation of aspiring creatives to have technical access and comprehensive information to be successful in the electronic music medium globally." Head to the Chicago Phonic's website for more information, and revisit our 2015 Origins film featuring Moss.
