  • Steve Reich's seminal minimalist piece Drumming will be reissued on vinyl for the first time later this month. San Francisco label Superior Viaduct will handle the new, remastered of the legendary piece, whose polyrhythmic thrust was influenced by the composer's study of African percussion and gamelan. The original performance of Drumming, written for eight tuned drums, three marimbas, three glockenspiels, piccolo and voice, was first performed at MoMA in New York City in 1971, with Reich leading an ensemble that included Art Murphy, Steve Chambers, Russ Hartenberger, James Preiss, Jon Gibson, Joan La Barbara, Judy Sherman, Jay Clayton, Ben Harms, Gary Burke, Frank Maefsky and James Ogden. Superior Viaduct will reissue the original 1972 double-vinyl edition of Drumming, pressed in an edition of 600 by John Gibson. The label says it "represents the culmination of Reich's investigation into rhythmic phase relationships and its early realization captures a remarkably organic feel, especially compared to the more widely known version on Deutsche Grammophon from 1974."
