- Bring Down The Walls pairs established artists with recently incarcerated vocalists for covers of house classics.
New York nonprofit Creative Time has released a benefit album called Bring Down The Walls.
The album is part of a larger project to "turn an unconventional lens on the prison industrial complex through house music and nightlife." It features covers of house classics like "Break 4 Love," "Promised Land," "Your Love" and "Love Can't Turn Around," pairing established artists and producers with vocalists who recently incarcerated. Larry Heard, Honey Dijon, Nguzunguzu, Robert Owens, Empress Of, MikeQ and Seven Davis Jr. all feature.
Funds raised from the album—which is available on Bandcamp, will go towards Critical Resistance, a "grassroots organization building an international movement to end the prison industrial complex," according to the Bring Down The Walls press release.
"Being formerly incarcerated myself, I am keenly aware of the therapeutic power of music and knew this project would be an opportunity for me to utilize my talent in a constructive way," says vocalist Cameron Holmes. "I believe the people closest to a problem are best positioned to solve it."
