- The group's second album is due out through Crosstown Rebels in July.
Damian Lazarus is releasing his second album with his band The Ancient Moons on July 20th.
Heart Of Sky combines "Lazarus' cosmic world influences with his love for '80s soul and funk artists such as Loose Ends, Luther Vandross, Maze and Gwen Guthrie," according to the press release. Lazarus started out by digging for soul samples to use in his tracks, and expanded the idea into music from the full band. London vocalist Jesse Appiah appears on most of the album, while I Am Arrows frontman Ben Chetwood, Rob Gentry from the Heritage Orchestra and Lazarus himself also have vocal spots.
"My background is very much in soul music," Lazarus says. "I started buying records when I was 12, listening to pirate radio stations in London, going to soul all-dayers, jazz-funk, rare groove. I spent every penny on records with strong vocals and hooky choruses. On the new album, I thought maybe there was a way to connect that heart and soul to a positive, trippy, psychedelic sound."
The LP will come through Lazarus' label Crosstown Rebels in partnership with BMG. It follows their first album, 2015's From The Other Side, and a handful of singles since then.
