  • YouTube has officially entered the streaming marketplace with its own platform. The new service, YouTube Music, aims to streamline the process of listening to music on YouTube, the video giant explained in a blog post. YouTube Music will feature official albums and songs, playlists, artist radio and discovery tools. The streaming platform will exist as a mobile app and desktop player with a free, ad-supported tier, an ad-free Premium level for $9.99 per month and a $11.99 monthly subscription that also includes their paid video platform, YouTube Red, which is now called YouTube Premium. It will be available in the U.S., Mexico, Australia and New Zealand on May 22nd, with more countries to follow. As many have complained, the current process of listening to music on YouTube, especially on mobile, is clunky and not easy to manage—nor can you actually continuing listening to a song while your phone is locked. YouTube has long been teens' go-to place to listen to music, however as of about a year ago, that trend shifted towards Spotify. YouTube Music could be the company's attempt at reclaiming that top spot.
