Approximately 20,000 people, including members of the Berlin club community, gathered on Sunday for counter-demonstrations.
According to police estimates, the march run by the German political party Alternative für Deutschland (AfD) attracted 5,000 supporters. There were around 20,000 anti-AfD protesters, made up of at least 13 separate counter-demonstrations. One of those was run by Reclaim Club Culture, which gathered representatives from clubs such as ://about blank, Prince Charles, OHM, Salon Zur Wilden Renate, Sisyphos and Tresor, promising to "Bass the AfD away." House and techno could be heard from at least 20 speaker-equipped trucks.
At least 2,000 police were on hand to monitor the demonstrations, which moved through Berlin's city centre. Local police said on Twitter that they had to use pepper spray to stop demonstrators from trying to break down barriers separating the rallies.
