- The Austrian artist revamped his sound for his first release since 2014's Joined Ends.
Dorian Concept has signed to Brainfeeder for a new album out in August.
The Nature of Imitation was recorded in 2016 and 2017 after time spent "meticulously un-learning his prodigious production process and developing a brand new sound," the label says. Following the release of (and touring around) his 2014 LP, Joined Ends, Oliver Thomas Johnson went off the grid to undergo this transformation. The label notes say the new one is influenced by '60s jazz, '70s fusion, '80s neo prog-rock and '90s electronica, with Johnson seeking to "replicate 'modern' music elements with old-fashioned methods, live-playing and hand-recording deceptively digital sounds in service of a tongue-in-cheek 'parody of nostalgia.'"
Johnson's ties with Brainfeeder head Flying Lotus go back a decade, starting with the latter putting a Dorian Concept remix on his 2008 Essential Mix. Johnson toured with the Flying Lotus live band and played keys on the LA artist's Cosmogramma album. He also contributed production to Thundercat's The Golden Age Of Apocalypse and remixed Taylor McFerrin.
Listen to the album opener, "Promises."
