  • Modal Electronics is releasing a new synthesiser called SKULPT. The British manufacturer is best known for monster polyphonic synths like the 002 and the 008. While those flagship products will set you back several thousand dollars, SKULPT is expected to retail for under $300. It aims to bring an expanded range of sonic options to the portable synth market, a crowded section of the industry known for the likes of KORG's Volca series, Roland's Boutique line and the Make Noise 0-Coast. SKULPT boasts an impressive array of features for a synth of its size and price, containing four polyphonic voices with eight oscillators per voice and a state variable filter. Each oscillator has morphing waveforms and can be routed to generate FM and ring modulation. There's also an extensive modulation matrix, three envelopes, two LFOs, distortion, delay, a polyphonic sequencer and an arpeggiator. It weighs less than a kilo and can run on six AA batteries for around 12 hours. There's also USB power, which can function as a MIDI connection. SKULPT will be available to preorder on Kickstarter from July 13th. Listen to audio demos of SKULPT.
