John Do, Justin Gourley, and Larry Kahm have been laying the foundation of high quality, soulful, and just plain fun house / techno parties in Los Angeles for three years straight now, and it is rock solid. DJ, dance floor, sound system (personally tuned by the Basic crew), and a roomful of people ready to dance and have fun are the cornerstones of the party. Basic at King King in Hollywood has just recently moved from being a monthly to a bi-weekly affair, and has become the essential Friday night out in Los Angeles for those seeking refuge from the kiddy noise endurance tests that many of the larger nights can be. Through their perseverance in providing the best environment possible, they’ve attained the stature of those other famed L.A. mid-size events, the Monday Night Social, Deep, and Wax. Previous headlining guests include Hipp-e, Dano, DJ Three, Mark “Mad Dog” Tabberner, and Tyler Stadius. And of course, there is the unique trio of John, Justin, and Larry, and their ever growing and evolving DJing talents. RA sat down with Basic to discuss their take on the Los Angeles scene, the keys to their longevity, and their commitment to providing better house music.
