- The councilmember who helped take down the cabaret law will work at the Freelancers Union.
Brooklyn councilmember Rafael Espinal is resigning from his post at New York city council.
The New York Post reports that Espinal will be taking a job at the Freelancers Union. His term was due to end at the end of 2021, when he would be unable to seek re-election due to term limits.
Espinal came to prominence as a fierce advocate for New York nightlife culture, eventually repealing the city's controversial no-dancing cabaret law (which former mayor Giuliani exploited as part of a crackdown on nightclubs in the '90s). He also called for a New York nightlife mayor position, which resulted in the creation of the office of nightlife and the appointment of Ariel Palitz as the first night mayor.
