- Dance fans on the Eastern seaboard would do well to check out the inaugural Virgin Festival happening in Baltimore September 23, 2006. The event will feature two main stages and a dance tent, and while the main stages are given over to the rocktastic likes of The Who and The Red Hot Chili Peppers, dance fans will be well catered for both in the dance tent and lower down on the bill on the main stage. The dance tent is a mostly English affair with John Digweed, Carl Cox and James Holden headlining. Tiesto will be flying in to represent for Holland and the trance nation, while local indie hip-hopper RJD2 goes to bat for America. Dance fans of the pop persuasion might also be drawn to the main stages earlier in the day to catch Gnarls Barkley, The Brazilian Girls, The Scissor Sisters or Thievery Corporation. Elsewhere The Killers, The Flaming Lips, Keane, Clap Your Hands Say Yeah and The New Pornographers provide the rock and roll. Check RA's event details for the full lineup. Promoter Seth Hurwitz explained the concept of the festival to Billboard magazine. "I did not want to book every band I could find and put up as many stages as I could and do a smaller version of Coachella or Austin City Limits or these other great festivals," says Hurwitz. "My concept was to book the absolute best, most power-packed, quality-versus-quantity lineup I could." The sister Virgin Festival is also happening in Toronto on Sept. 9 and 10. The Baltimore and Toronto are the first overseas ventures for the longstanding U.K. festival. This year's English editions will be held at Hylands Park in Chelmsford on Aug. 19 and Weston Park in Staffordshire on Aug. 20. The Virgin Festival happens at Pimlico Race Course in Baltimore September 23, 2006.
