- The eccentric Canadian house artist will release his next album this spring on Circus Company.
Guillaume & The Coutu Dumonts will release his second full-length this May on Circus Company.
Breaking the Fourth Wall shows the Montreal native moving even further beyond conventional definitions of house or techno. A strong overtone of afrobeat and latin music permeates the album, and each of its eleven songs consists almost entirely of live instrumentation; organs, saxophones and guitars in particular. Several of the tracks experiment with alternative rhythms, such as the frantically limping "Decennie" or the slow and chugging "Radio Novela," while two of them—"Unwelcome" and "Intermede"—are completely beatless, semi-ambient numbers. Nonetheless, with tunes like "Helicoptere" "Can't Have Everything" and "Walking the Pattern," dance floor selections are in no short supply.
In recording the album, Dumont had plenty of help from his charismatic friends at Circus Company. "On the Lips" features tongue-in-cheek vocals by the San Francisco-based artist Dave Aju, and "Can't Have Everything" was co-produced with quirky French trio dOP, who will include an alternate version of the tune on their forthcoming album Assurance Vie. Dumont's brother Gabriel also makes an appearance, playing guitar on "Discotheque," an experimental jam with a frantic 6/8 beat.
