  • Confused by all the options for post-Hart Plaza partying? Here's our roundup.
  • RA's guide to Movement afterparties image
  • Much like some Moore's Law of techno, Detroit has been exponentially overwhelmed year on year by the vast number of afterparties offered around the festival weekend. With the cream of the world's electronic music scene in town, the parties feature artists performing at Movement, but also a load of exclusive sets and some parties with rosters which could even be said to almost match the main event. Festival aside, it's now got to a point of such eye-wateringly attractive line-ups that revelers may begin to fear for their physical well-being at trying to cram it all into one mere weekend. RA advises you to take a deep breath and survey our guide to partying post- (or pre-) Hart Plaza. Friday The actual festival doesn't kick off until Saturday, but there's plenty on offer for those who need to break in their dancing feet the night before. Friday has a good number of choices, but the two most popular options on both sides of the techno spectrum are the official Yel3 Opening Party and the Bangtech crew's 14th anniversary, 11-hour marathon. Yel3 welcomes Dutch 'molecular' DJ Speedy J doing his driving techno thing for 5 hours in the main room. Upstairs, ambient sounds will be covered by Matthew Hawtin, and downstairs in the legendary Shelter space, Spectral Sound will be celebrating their 10th anniversary. The Ann-Arbor based label will be showcasing their very best with head honcho Matthew Dear doing it three ways with the omnipresent Seth Troxler and Ryan Elliott. Lee Curtiss also plays live. Over at Bangtech, the name of the game is pure, hard Detroit Techno with over 40 artists coming at it from their respective angles. It's guaranteed to be an unforgiving all-dayer, (particularly for the unwitting baseball fans who come to watch the Detroit Tigers at home in the Sports Bar downstairs) and best of all, it's completely free. Otherwise, you can catch the FXHE boss, Omar-S (who you'll most likely not catch playing the festival anytime soon) for the Beretta party over at 10 Critics, or the Chicago promoters Smart Bar have that distinctive Stimming sound live along with Ellen Allien at the Majestic Theater. Saturday Kid in a candy shop is what comes to mind on Saturday, with a Berghain bomb landing squarely in central Detroit, and over at The Works for the first official after party, Blue Collar present some of the best of America's younger talent. Centre Street Social is set to go off, with both Ben Klock and Marcel Dettmann, re-channeling their Berghain sound back to the city which so heavily influenced them, with minimal pioneer Daniel Bell and New York house wunderkind, Levon Vincent finishing up the heavy-hitting bill. Back over at the I Love You But I've Chosen Techno party, the Works have been completely refitted and re-kitted to try and survive the 12 hour onslaught from a line-up which includes party starters Claude VonStroke and Troxler, with Konrad Black and Bruno Pronsato supplying some live minimalism. If you're craving something a little more soulful, local legend Theo Parrish always satisfies, playing alongside Mr. Fingers himself, Larry Heard at Deep Detroit. And for those who'll be digging deep into their pockets by this point, the Detroit Techno Militia are in full effect at the 5 Elements Gallery for their free annual roadblock. Sunday If you're still on it by Sunday, the place to see out the tail end of the weekend is at the aptly named Shit Show, which is to run straight through from the wee hours of Sunday morning till 10PM that night at the TV Lounge. Soul Clap will be bringing a Wolf + Lamb flavor along with their party pop edits, Detroit rising star Kyle Hall and a live acid freak out from Darkcube are just a taste of what's on offer over the 19 hours. Then again, you can't go wrong with Dumb Unit and Vakant either. Resolute is handling their affairs this year, welcoming Jeremy P. Caulfield, Alex Smoke, Dario Zenker, Alexi Delano and more to join the fun. Those who view this as just a daytime flutter can then see the night out in style on the Boat Party, which this year features festival headliner Ricardo Villalobos doing the cabin mate thing with Panorama Bar's Cassy, then pure Detroit from Stacey Pullen and the festival's very own Carl Craig. The Detroit Princess, a refitted old gambling boat will be moored right by Hart Plaza from 11PM onwards and will depart at 1AM promptly so even those without their sea legs, can enjoy some grooving time on deck. For something much more closer to home, you can go to Moodymann's roller disco, Soul Skate, which will provide some nourishing disco and soul foods to repair your battered bodies, although RA cannot be held responsible for injuries sustained whilst skating under the influence. Movement isn't the only one celebrating a Detroit birthday this year either, with Juan Atkins' hugely influential Metroplex label getting down for it's 25th anniversary, with a very rare appearance from the full Belleville Three and a load of other artists young and old, all heavily influenced by their seminal productions. Monday After that lot, it'll most likely feel like weeks have passed but you can pack quite a bit into Monday's 24 hours, starting off with another outdoor afterparty mainstay, the fifth Need I Say More at Old Miami. The Visionquest posse and Leftroom's Matt Tolfrey are among those supplying the sounds. Later on that night, the Works will once again play host to Fuk The Aristocrats with another huge assortment of acts and stages. Kyle Geiger and Dustin Zahn will be bringing blistering Drumcode techno as well as a live set from Rephlex Record's Wisp. If you're eardrums need some rest, then head over to see English disco wizard DJ Harvey, who'll spin you a cosmic blanket at the TV Lounge billed from 10pm until "the cows come home."
