The Prenzlauer Berg club will be forced to shut its doors as of January 1st, 2011 due to a new housing development at the site.
Berlin venue Icon has announced it is to shut at the end of this year.
As one of the only clubs in the city to book tier one drum & bass, hip-hop and broken beat acts, the news comes as a blow to Berlin's wider electronic music scene. De:Bug reported yesterday that a new housing development in the immediate area is to blame, and took a dig at the "merciless gentrification" of the Prenzlauer Berg district. The club's New Year celebrations will double up as their closing party.
True to form, the coming weeks at the club will feature key drum & bass/dubstep/broken beat names rinsing the venue's powerful sound system, which includes DJ Vadim, John B, Marcus Intalex, Nosaj Thing, Actress, DJ Food and The Bug.
