- A new compilation showcases artists from Izhevsk, Russia's hotbed of electronic music.
Early next month, St. Petersburg-based label THEOMATIC will release Obscured By The Machines: Introverted Dubs of the Izhevsk City, a compilation showcasing artists from what some call Russia's capital of electronic music.
Located in the Western Urals region far from any major hub, Izhevsk is a small industrial city that's known mostly for being the birthplace of the AK-47. Russian DJs and producers also know it as one of their country's most consistent sources of electronic music, including dub, disco and deep house. Why this is exactly remains unclear, though one theory blames radiation, secret military labs and the ghost of Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky.
Obscured by the Machines highlights some of Izhevk's core producers, including THEOMATIC boss AN-2 (who technically moved to St Petersburg in recent years, but regularly "visits his hometown to get the salutary radiation and regenerate his creative power"). According to a press release, the compilation's style ranges from "haunted dubs" to ambient. It will be Theomatic's first CD and full-length release.
