- The young producer's first LP is all about New York, hip hop and The Warriors.
MANIK will release his first album, Armies of the Night, through Ovum in May.
Chris Manik grew up in Queens on a steady diet of hip-hop and R&B. Both his environment and his influences make a big impact on Armies of the Night, an album that paints a comic book picture of New York through slow, syncopated beats and dirty house tracks (there are a few skits in there too). Walter Hill's 1979 cult classic The Warriors also leaves its mark, as track titles like "We're from Coney" and vocal samples throughout the album make clear. Armies of the Night is the 25-year-old producer's second record on Ovum so far, and was "stitched together" by label boss Josh Wink.
