  • Sydney's Abercrombie Hotel is set to re-open its doors after one-and-a-half years of closure. Throughout the '00s the hotel hosted a number of well-known and long-running events. Techno enjoyed a hefty presence courtesy of promoters like HAHA Industries and Deep As Funk, as did DNBBQ's large-scale drum & bass parties, and the weekly indie rock-oriented Purple Sneakers. Despite its booming popularity, the Abercrombie was forced to close its doors in the wake of the redevelopment of the adjacent Carlton & United Breweries, which were demolished in 2009 to make way for a number of planned apartment and shopping complexes. The project went on to encounter several delays as a result of the recent global financial crisis, subsequently permitting the hotel's owners to grant a two-year operating lease. James Wirth, AKA Jamie Doom of the Bang Gang Deejays, has been identified as one of the new leaseholders, along with an unnamed owner of Surry Hills' Norfolk Hotel. So far, a launch date has not been announced, but is expected to come within the next fortnight after minor renovations are complete.
