- Clone will start the extensive reissue series with a collection of Gerald Donald and James Stinson's first 12-inches.
Clone have unveiled the first installment in their series of Drexciya reissues: Journey Of The Deep Sea Dweller 1, a collection of early works by the highly influential Detroit duo, due out in December on Clone Classic Cuts.
Journey Of The Deep Sea Dweller 1 draws mostly from Drexciya's first string of 12-inches: Bubble Metropolis, The Journey Home, Aquatic Invasion, The Return of Drexciya, The Unknown Aquazone and their debut record Deep Sea Dweller, all of which came out between 1992 and 1997 on labels like Warp, Rephlex and Underground Resistance. It also includes one selection from the 1997 full-length The Quest ("Dehydration") and an apparently unreleased track called "Unknown Journey." All of the songs have been remastered from the original tapes by the Dutch producer and studio engineer Alden Tyrell.
Clone points out that the album comes 20 years after Drexciya's first record, and 10 years after their last, Grava 4, which came out just months prior to the death of founding member James Stinson. In the newsletter announcing the release, the Rotterdam label carefully explained their decision to make a new collection from the group's hallowed back catalog:
"Since the original releases have such a strong character, appeal and stand on their own, this re-issue can never re-create the magic of those originals. So instead we stirred up the catalogue taking the tracks out of their original context, giving the 'in the know' listener a fresh experience and the new listener a document that is the best possible introduction to the aquatic world of Drexciya."
