- The ambient duo will release their first full-length in December.
Billow Observatory will release their self-titled debut album in December.
Billow Observatory is a duo made up of Danish producer Jonas Munk (AKA Manual) and Jason Kolb, a guitarist in the ambient rock band Auburn Lull. The two artists first came into contact in 2004 and started making music together not long after that, though none of it ever saw the light of day. Their debut album alone took more than half a decade to complete. "We never expected to be working on material for six years, but something very exciting took shape as soon as we started working together and we had to follow that idea to the end," says Munk.
Though it hardly sounds like it, Billow Observatory uses guitar almost exclusively as source material. Munk explains: "The basis for most of this material comes from guitars and effects devices but every bit has been processed and treated with software… I didn't use a lot of different effects—the focus on my part has been on shaping each bit of sound to perfection, still maintaining the character of a guitar but turning it into something that doesn't sound 'played'. I think of a lot of this material as sounding as if it comes from surroundings rather than from hands touching instruments."
Billow Observatory's debut album will see release on Felte, a label that just launched last month. You can stream one of the tracks right here.
