  • Frankie Knuckles will begin a new residency at Smart Bar in Chicago this Sunday. Since starting out more than three decades ago, Knuckles has become one of electronic music's most iconic artists, earning himself the nickname Godfather of House. Over the years the NYC native has amassed an extensive collection of tracks and remixes, and as a DJ, seasoned Chicago clubbers might fondly recall his local residencies at The Warehouse (we took a close look at the history of that nightspot last year) and Power Plant, the club he ran in the mid-1980s. Knuckles' first appearance at Smart Bar as a resident is this Sunday, when he'll headline the club's Queen weekly (it'll also serve as his birthday party). Derrick Carter and Michael Serafini and Garrett David will also take turns on the decks. The party will also mark the first time that Knuckles and Carter, one of Chicago's best house exports, are billed together. Aside from Knuckles, Carter and Serafini, Smart Bar's 2013 resident roster includes Justin Long, Kate Simko, Sassmouth, John Simmons, Orchard Lounge, The Black Madonna and Nate Manic. NYC crew The Bunker also launched a Smart Bar residency last weekend and though details are scarce for now, they're slated for more appearances later in the year.
