  • Nord has announced updates to its Lead and Drum synthesizer lines. First up is the Lead 4, the latest in its line of virtual analog synthesizers. Introduced in 1995, the synthesizer has long been known for its flexibility, which this latest update expands upon. Among the features are a retooled two-oscillator sound engine and a new button set called Variation that lets you alter multiple parameters simultaneously. The full keyboard version will be ready for May release, and a key-less tabletop/rack version will follow over the summer. The second version of the Nord Drum is also due out in May. Its sound engine is based on resonance modeling, subtractive synthesis and FM, with sample-rate-reduction, nonlinear distortion and a noise module included to help rough up the sounds you create. You can use drum pads or a MIDI sequencer to control the sounds. But Nord is also rolling out its own ethernet-connected, minimalist control device, the Nord Pad, for use with the synth. Nord will release the Lead 4 and Drum 2 in May 2013 at a suggested retail price of 1,849 Euro and 499 Euro, respectively. The rack version of the Lead 4 is set for August 2013 release for 1,649 Euro. The Nord Pad is priced at 259 Euro.
