  • A petition has been started to rename King Street on the western end of SoHo to Larry Levan Way. The section of King Street between Varick and Greenwich in Manhattan was the original home of the Paradise Garage, the formative nightclub where Levan played his most well-known sets, helping to establish house music as we know it today. The club was open from 1976 until 1987, and Levan passed away from heart failure in 1992. He's since become somewhat of a legendary figure in dance music, and the petition is the latest effort to honour his contributions. The drive for signatures coincides with a Red Bull Music Academy-sponsored street party along the same stretch of King Street on May 11th, which will feature another NYC house pioneer, Francois K. David Depino—who used to warm up for Levan at the Garage—as well as another resident at the former venue, Joey Llanos, have also been tapped. The event is free for all ages and will take place from noon until 6 PM, with more special guests promised. You can sign the petition here.
