We spoke to the producer about his plans for the coming month.
Running from September 20th through December 20th, Buttrich will play shows in the UK, Europe and North America. He's invited a long list of friends and past collaborators—Audiofly, Carl Craig, Davide Squillace, DJ Tennis, Guti, Josh Wink, Lee Burridge, Loco Dice and The Martinez Brothers among them—to perform alongside him at various dates.
As well as celebrating 20 years of making music, the tour paves the way for a new label (Rhythm Assault) and an album (Collaborator), both of which will arrive in 2015. We spoke to Buttrich about all this via email:
Does this tour signal a shift in focus to your own productions after so much experience working with/for other artists?
I have been creating solo productions throughout my whole career, so this tour does not shift focus, but I do see it as a way of shining a light on all the things I do—be that collaborating with other people, producing other artists, working on my own music or playing live. I always have and I always will produce for other artists such as Timo Maas and Loco Dice because they are inspiring and it's good to be social while creating music. It gives me a lot of input and enjoyment.
This experience of working in the studio with artists I admire is shared on the stage, too. I wanted to create a celebration of my working style, taking what I do in the studio and putting it on a stage for everyone to see live. This is why I've created this tour and album project, to continue that journey of working with great talent but to also highlight what I can create as an artist in my own right.
Can you tell us about your new label and collaborative album?
Yes, the album is in progress and will be released in 2015, and I will call it Collaborator. I can't say much more right now but I will be releasing a single from the album this year. Rhythm Assault, my new label, is where I'll launch the album. For me it's more or less a permanent playground. I want to use it as a platform to create and showcase new musical projects by myself. I don't want any boundaries, but a home I can consistently go to in order to release my music. The future for it is without boundaries.
How did you go about choosing DJs to spin alongside on this tour?
That wasn't hard. They are my friends. But also artists that I admire for the music they play, make and perform. I have known everyone on the list for many years, so I'm really looking forward to having them play with me on this 20-year anniversary tour.
