Salsoul will issue another installment of Larry Levan's Paradise Garage: The Legend Of Dance Music on January 19th.
The late New York DJ's decade-long stint as the key resident at the Paradise Garage is quite literally the stuff of legend. The club's sound system and Levan's innovative mixing techniques and selection would have an indelible effect on the concept of the modern dance club, all the while creating a canon of New York Garage Classics.
Lists of records played by Levan at the Garage continue to circulate as a kind of informal education on the roots of modern dance music and back in 2003, King Street and Nite Grooves founder Hisa Ishioka compiled key Garage tracks released on disco imprint Salsoul as a four-part Japan-only CD set. The first of these compilations was reissued by Salsoul in October, and the upcoming volume features cuts by underground disco staples First Choice, Candido and Loletta Holloway spread across six sides.
