- DJ Spoko and Spoek Mathambo's band will release their debut album in March.
Soundway Records will put out Fantasma's Free Love on March 9th.
Fantasma could be considered a South African supergroup, counting several of the country's most well-known musical exports as members. The most familiar to RA readers may be podcast contributor DJ Spoko, who collaborated with DJ Mujava on the latter's "Township Funk" back in 2008 and released the War God LP via global club resource Lit City Trax. Sub Pop affiliated rapper Spoek Mathambo heads the group, which also includes Andre Geldenhuys, Bhekisenzo Cele and Michael Buchanan.
The group's sound is similarly hard to pin down, mixing Spoko's trademark Bacardi House sound with shangaan electro, the Zulu folk music known as maskandi, western hip-hop and psych rock influences. They describe this futuristic mishmash as "Guzu." Check out the video for "Shangrila" below.
