Studio 338 has announced its booking schedule from February through July, kicking off with a 12-hour bash this weekend.
Since reopening in March last year, the Greenwich venue has hosted a broad range of parties and acts, from Eastern Electrics and Cocoon to RPR Soundsystem and Apollonia. The next few months will cover similar ground, with Saturday's opening featuring Fred P, Kowton, Call Super and a four-hour ItaloJohnson set. Sankeys have four events in the pipeline, the first of which will take place on February 28th (Valentino Kanzyani, Brawther) and the second on March 21st in conjunction with VIVa Warriors (Steve Lawler, Mathew Jonson). The week before, on March 14th, Studio 338 turns one with Ellen Allien, Nathan Fake and Workshop head Lowtec.
Looking further ahead, in April Sankeys returns with a Tribal Sessions party on the 4th, followed by a 15-hour Half Baked event on the 5th. Both lineups are TBA. May is all about the deeper shades of house and techno: Daniel Bell and Matthew Dear have been booked for Visionquest's Detroit Affair all-dayer on the 3rd; secretsundaze host Delano Smith, Jeremy Underground Paris and a TBA guest on the 24th; and RPR Soundsystem (AKA, Rhadoo, Petre Inspirescu and Raresh) return to Home on Saturday the 30th. June and July highlights include a Sankeys mini-festival on June 27th and Art of Dark's 4th birthday on July 11th. In both cases, lineups will be revealed closer to the date.
For more on what's to come at the club, we chatted with Dan Perrin, Studio 338's musical director, over email. What does Studio 338 bring to London's club scene?
Firstly I think we bring a much needed new place to dance for such a big city, in light of so many closures in the past 10 years. With so much gloom around notable losses to the clubbing landscape I think it's encouraging when something new comes along. I also think we have a different feel and vibe to other clubs given that we have a big terrace, which sets us apart from the more industrial venues we all love. It's nice to have different ways to experience music.
Is it fair to say that some of the winter/spring bookings represent a new direction for the club?
I wouldn't say it's a new direction. More of an evolution and a continuation of the path we have set out on from the beginning. Many of the events, such as secretsundaze, Krankbrother, VIVa and our marathon party with RPR Soundsystem, Home, are all returning and we have been lucky enough to add a lot more of the types of brands and labels we want to work with to make it an exciting second year. It would be very easy for us to book huge names week in, week out and play it safe, but we are music lovers ourselves and we want to bring fresh acts to London and enjoy being at our own parties!
Tell us about the changes that have been made to The Loft and Terrace spaces.
So the latest news is that we have added a new bar to Studio 338, which comes complete with its own mini terrace. The new area is much more chilled-out and will give people the chance to hang with friends and socialise as part of the all-day events we often hold. I feel it adds a welcome new dimension to the 338 experience. I'm particularly excited about showing people the Garden at our opening party as it's looking great! Down on the main terrace we have added some video mapping capabilities, more forest-like production bits and some other surprises. We'll have a bit more to tell on that side soon, too.
