We speak with the RVNG duo about their next two releases.
First up is Rein, a single, 50-minute piece crafted by Blondes, AKA Sam Haar and Zach Steinman, during one weekend-long studio session. It will be released as a limited edition cassette on June 23rd—it'll also be available to stream via SoundCloud. The Rein session paved the way to a full EP, Persuasion, which is coming out on vinyl and digital formats in early August. The two releases feature the duo's first original material on RVNG since 2013's Swisher.
We spoke with Haar and Steinman this week via email to find out more:
How did the fact you guys no longer live in the same city impact the recording of Persuasion and Rein?Tracklist
Well, Sam moved to Philadelphia, which is only two hours away [from New York], so it hasn't changed too much. These records were made by meeting up for weekends in NYC and jamming for much of the time. I guess by distilling our time playing together into chunks it gave us time limitations with which to work within.
How would you say these two releases have evolved from Swisher?
Persuasion is a little heavier and a bit more produced and focused in techno language. It was created in a similar way to Swisher, but the aesthetic world it occupies is a bit different. We were working with less melodic material and more texture and acid and dub-techno influences.
Rein goes in the other direction. Rein is more experimental and made up of straight improvisations recorded over a single weekend. It represents much more of the freedom and directness that we're able to work with in our live shows. There's a lot more involved in producing tracks than simply playing music, so the cassette is a way for us to share that side of our creativity un-filtered through studio production and track creation.
