The UK producer is back with his first LP in three years, due out in May.
London artist Derwin Schlecker has been with Ghostly International since 2010, when they released his first album Lucky Shiner. Up until 2014 he was also running the label Notown, which provided an outlet for his own singles and EPs, as well as material from Luke Abbott and Wanda Group among others.
The inspiration for his third album grew from two trips to Japan alongside photographer Laura Lewish. "Japan has this light that we don’t get here," Schlecker says. "It's hard to explain. You know how LA has this dusk feeling? That orange light that makes the place glow, and the neon signs? Well, Japan has this… at certain times of the year, it has this filter on stuff." He recorded the album upon returning to his family home in Chelmsford, England, taking cues from Lewish's photo documentation.
Having finished recording, Schlecker brought the album to close friend and collaborator Luke Abbott for mixing and mastering. "It has a homely feel," Schlecker continues. "The tracks were made at home and they were mixed at Luke's studio, so throughout the process, there's always been access to family and your local surroundings. And banana bread."
