  • The University of Pennsylvania, in Philadelphia, is hosting a series of masterclasses and concerts called Musica Practica / Elettronica Viva. Key parts of a university course focused on hardware-based electronic production, the program began in January, with classes—all of which are free and open to the public—taught by Paul J. Geissinger (AKA Starkey) and Michael Barker (Embarker). Kaitlyn Aurelia Smith, Mark Verbos, Michael Hopkins (Leisure Muffin) and Robert Aiki Aubrey Lowe will be involved in the classes this month and next. A pair of concerts are also confirmed. Next Monday, the 14th, an event will take place at the Hi5 Recording studio. Smith, a devotee of the Buchla Music Easel who has a new album called EARS on the way, and who's got a Spring tour of Europe lined up (she'll be supporting Battles for part of it), and Verbos, the longtime producer and gear-head based in New York, are both confirmed. Two local artists, Nadia Botello and Morphine Records affiliate Metasplice, round out the night's lineup. Then, on Wednesday, April 20th, Lowe—who just released on Demdike Stare Records—will perform at the university's Institute of Contemporary Art.
