  • Jameszoo will release an album via Brainfeeder on May 13th. Mitchel Van Dinther debuted on Kindred Spirits back in 2011, and through a handful of EPs for that label and Rwina Records, he established a leftfield take on beat music featuring odd samples and synth work. Fool is his first release since 2013, and also his first for Flying Lotus's Brainfeeder. Van Dinther himself calls this one "naive computer jazz." (And contrary to today's meaning, he alludes to the Latin etymology of the word, which refers to "native" or "a natural" in Latin, according to the label.) Fool was inspired by classic '70s records from Steve Kuhn, Robert Wyatt and Arthur Verocai, and features reimagined versions of Kuhn and Verocai works featuring the artists themselves—Rhodes and vocals from Steve Kuhn, and an hour-long jam with Verocai and vocalist Carlos Dafé, to be specific. "Fool is a product of coming to terms with myself," he says. "Whereas before electronic music was the foundation of my composing, now it is nothing more than an instrument within the range of many. I tried to create something that is both tradition and me fooling around." Check out "Flake" below.
